An adventure experience can be a memorable gift: a first dive, a canyon descent, a flight along a coastline. It also takes more planning than a parcel. The person has to want it, meet the operator's requirements and be free on a day when the weather cooperates.
This guide covers how to choose an experience, what to check before you pay and how to give it so that it actually happens.
1. Start with the person, not the activity
Think about how they like to spend a free day:
- Water lovers: try an introductory scuba dive, sea kayaking or canyoning.
- Heights and views: try via ferrata, paragliding, a microlight flight or hot-air ballooning.
- Pure speed: try skydiving, bungee jumping or zip lining.
- Snow and cold: try snowmobiling or dog sledding.
- Families: canopy and treetop courses are a good choice, and many accept young children.
If you are unsure, choose something with a gentle introductory version. A first canyon, a short flight or an introductory dive gives them a taste without committing them to a full course.
2. Check requirements before you buy
Each operator sets its own rules, and they are not negotiable on the day. On every listing, look for:
- Minimum age. For example, the Corsican flights we list from Saint-Florent show a minimum age of 12, and the introductory dives show age 8.
- Weight limits. Light aircraft, tandem skydives and paragliding flights often have them. The same Saint-Florent flights list a 90 kg maximum.
- Health and fitness. Diving, high-altitude activities and anything strenuous may need a health declaration or medical clearance. Read the listing, and ask the operator if anything is unclear.
- Swimming ability for water-based activities.
If you are not sure about a requirement, ask the operator before you buy. Don't guess.
3. Keep the date flexible
Most outdoor activities depend on the weather and the season:
- Canyoning and sea trips usually run in the warmer months.
- Snow activities run in winter.
- Flights and balloon rides depend on wind and visibility, so they often move at short notice.
When you buy, ask:
- How long is the voucher or booking valid?
- Can the date be changed, and is there a fee?
- What happens if the operator cancels for weather?
- Can the booking be transferred to someone else?
A gift that expires before the season opens is no gift at all.
4. Turn it into a trip
An experience works best as part of a day out or a short break. Pair it with a destination: one activity, a good place to stay and time to enjoy it. Our Corsica adventure guide, for example, groups canyons, via ferrata, dives and scenic flights by region, so you can plan a whole trip around one gift.
5. Present it well
- Give a clue rather than the whole surprise. Some people love a surprise. Others want to prepare, especially for something like a first skydive. If in doubt, tell them.
- Include the practical details: where to meet, what to wear and how to book or change the date.
- Offer to go with them. Many experiences are better shared, and they may be more likely to book if they don't have to go alone.
6. Avoid common mistakes
- Buying for someone who has said they are afraid of heights or water.
- Choosing a date for them without checking their calendar.
- Ignoring travel time to the activity.
- Assuming that every activity runs year-round.
- Overlooking requirements such as age, weight, health and swimming ability.
